Malnutrition is a state in which a deficiency, unhealthy excess or imbalance of energy, protein and other nutrients causes measurable adverse effects on tissue/body form (body shape, size and composition), function or clinical outcome. Although the term ‘malnutrition’ can encompass both overnutrition/obesity and undernutrition, for the remainder of this document the term is only used to mean undernutrition.

An adulterant is a chemical substance which should not be contained within other substances (e.g. food, beverages, fuels) for legal or other reasons. The addition of adulterants is called adulteration. The word is only appropriate when the additions are unwanted by the recipient, otherwise the expression would be food additive. Food adulteration includes addition of colors, animal fats and various organic and inorganic chemicals. 

IAPEN quality group is planning to develop a toolkit for monitoring the nutritional intake of children in house, schools and anganwadis. Parents, schools and anganwadis will be given special training programs by our nutrition quality group members.  Schools/anganwadis/parents can join IAPEN to give financial support to our quality group members. The members will be provided a web interface for submitting their weekly/monthly menus or food habits for expert opinion. IAPEN will also issue certification to the anganwadis/schools after verification.
