Dr. Bharat Metha Research Fellowship in Ketogenic Enteral Nutrition is constituted by IAPEN in the year 2014, in rememberance of Late Dr. Bharat Metha, Physician, Chennai.
Dr. Bharat Metha is one of the pioneer in Ketogenic Enteral Nutrition (KEN) in India. He gave his first plenary talk on Ketogenic Enteral Nutrition in the "International Conference on Digestive Disorders, 23-24 February 2013, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India.
Ketogenic Enteral Nutrition is a revolutionary weight reduction technique developed by Italian Professor Gianfranco Capello who set up the first clinic in Rome. This technique can help obese people lose up to 6 – 10% of their initial body weight in just 10 days.
Ketogenic Enteral Nutrition allows the body to switch into “Ketogenic” mode, whereby it breaks down its own fat stored for use as energy. The patients do not feel hungry throughout the entire duration of the 10 day session, and can perform normal daily activities without impairment and without the need for any additional food. The doctor threads a narrow tube through the patient’s nose, down their throat and into their stomach. A pump drip feeds a protein liquid formula through the tube continuously throughout the day and night for a period of 10 days. There is no limit on how often this 10 day cycle can be repeated but there needs to be a 10 day rest period in between cycles. The estimated energy intake while on this diet is 240 calories per day.
Very few research studies were available in India related to the Ketogenic Enteral Nutrition Diet but many commercial Keto centres were started in India. For promoting research on Ketogenic Enteral Nutrition, the Indian Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, requested Dr. Bharat Metha to initiate reseach on this contraversial diet. He has established his own laboratory in Chennai and promoted research on Ketogenic Enteral Nutrition.
Dr. Bharat Metha Research Fellowship in Ketogenic Enteral Nutrition, will be given to the deserving students, who initiate student projects on Ketogenic Enteral Nutrition Diet. The student proposal can be submitted throughout the year via email firstname.lastname@example.org. The proposal should not exceed two pages and should contain, the institute name, student name(s), name of the guide(s), the title, abstract, approximate budget and signature of the Head of the Department.
Presently, 5 to 10 projects will be given throughout India per year and may increase in near future based on the donations to IAPEN.
We welcome industries, institutions, faculties and doctors to generoulsy donate funds for promoting more research projects under this Dr. Bharat Metha Research Fellowship in Ketogenic Enteral Nutrition programme.
